Of the 25 players taking part in a 2 day Basotho year opener Chess tournament, 13 of them were juniors born on or after January 1, 2004 making an incredible 52% of the total pool. Of the 8 females in attendance, 6 of them fall in the category of juniors born on or after the year 2004 (making it 75% juniors)
The stats indeed show the inclusiveness of the game of chess which accommodates all regardless of age or gender & perhaps gives hope that the future of Lesotho Chess looks bright with majority of players being juniors who already give more experienced players a run for their money.
The tournament consists of 6 rounds (3 on Saturday & 3 on Sunday) and after day 1 Former Lesotho National Chess Champion Sechaba Khalema is on sole lead having won all 3 of his games today..
